Webe Racing's Angle Fire race.
7/30/06

A few NMDRC racers went out to give it a try. Looks like fun. A race report by CrazyYami gives you a good feel for what the pictures show.

I know Angel fire isn't a NMDRC race, but it is in New Mexico and things have been slow on the site so I thought I would contribute. Only a few NMDRC guys were there, I ran into Paul Scroggie, DJ, and I pitted with Mike Graff and Greg Sceiford. I thought more of you should of showed up, especially after we gave them that beating at the Dunes. It was only fair to let those CO guys have a whack at us in their terrain. I went out on my practice loop in the morning, and forgot to let my suspension out. It was pretty brutal. After the start there were one or two little forest sections, and then you shoot up the ski slopes. At first this sounds fun but the slopes were all off camber and had loose rocks on them, so it was hard to get any traction. When I got to the top it was foggy because of early morning and we were in the clouds. Then you go into the woods into some really tight trails that weaved between the trees. The football sized rocks and roots were coved with slippery mud and it was really rough. I felt pretty goofy because the CO guys were cursing me out trying to get around me (they were polite but I could only imagine what they were thinking). Then you came out of the trees into an area with bigger rocks up to three feet. More trees and then into a rock quarry which really wasn't that bad. The big rocks I am kind of used to but the little rocks beat up your kidneys. Then we headed down the mountain with different combinations of roots, rocks and mud. At the end you would go up a bunch of muddy rocks and then a fast section to the finish line. My race wasn't until 12:30 so when I got back I let
out my suspension (all the way out) and jetted my bike. When my race started I screwed up the holeshot as always and then started up the mountain. The jetting
made a big difference and I passed several on the way up. Once I started the decent through the trees though everyone in my class passed me and I was on my own. Letting out my suspension didn't seem to make much difference, my seat was whacking my behind like a jackhammer. I am not going to go into to much detail
but Steven Kings "Misery" comes to mind. At the end of my third lap somebody threw a baseball sized rock at me and it whacked my knuckle. I thought for sure I
broke my finger. I pitted after my third lap and was told that I would only have one more lap, and then a beer! Hooray! I suffered through the fourth lap and to my horror they were waving the white flag.. My heart dropped but I gritted it out for one more. Finally I got the checkered flag and I ditched my bike ASAP. I was told that a bunch of guys had quit so I was hoping I might have done something in my class (no dice). Paul Scroggie tried to quit and his wife gave him a rash of s__t and I think he finished too. It was about 6 hours before I could sit down again. All in all it was a great race and I can't wait to go back next year!
